Frequently asked questions

Coffee questions, answered

Is Arabica better than Robusta?

There is no universal quality ranking based solely on species. Arabica and Robusta differ genetically and chemically, but cup quality also depends on variety, environment, cultivation, processing, roasting and brewing. High-quality Robusta exists, and poorly produced Arabica exists.

Does dark roast contain more caffeine?

Roast level does not provide a simple rule that one coffee will always contain more caffeine per serving. Measurement by bean mass, bean count and brewed serving can produce different comparisons. Brewing recipe and serving size also matter.

What grind should I use for French press?

A coarse grind is a common starting point, but the exact setting depends on the grinder, recipe and brew time. Adjust based on the result rather than treating “coarse” as a universal measurement.

What is the difference between natural and washed coffee?

Natural processing normally dries whole coffee cherries before removing the fruit. Washed processing removes the fruit and mucilage through mechanical and/or fermentation and washing steps before drying. Actual processing sequences vary.

Is honey processing made with honey?

No. In coffee processing, “honey” refers to mucilage left on the coffee during drying after the cherry has been depulped. It does not mean honey is added.
