Selective picking
Pickers collect ripe cherries, often making repeated passes through a field. Selective harvesting can help separate ripeness levels but requires considerable labour and depends on crop structure and terrain.
Strip harvesting
Cherries can be stripped from branches in a single pass, either by hand or with tools. The resulting harvest can contain a wider range of ripeness and plant material and therefore usually requires careful sorting.
Mechanical harvesting
Mechanical harvesters can improve harvesting speed and reduce labour requirements where terrain, planting density and farm infrastructure permit. Machines vary in how selectively they remove fruit.
Harvest timing
The optimum harvest window depends on variety, climate, altitude, flowering pattern and market or processing goals. Delayed harvesting can change fruit condition and increase the risk of overripe or fallen cherries.
