Heating systems
Espresso machines may use single boilers, heat-exchange systems, dual boilers or thermoblock-style systems. Each architecture makes different compromises in temperature management, steam capacity, size and energy use.
Pump and pressure
Pump pressure is not the same as the pressure actually experienced by the coffee puck. Restriction, valves and flow determine the pressure profile during brewing.
Temperature control
Thermostats, pressurestat systems, thermoblocks and electronic PID controllers use different strategies to manage temperature.
Pre-infusion
Pre-infusion wets the coffee before full brewing pressure or flow is reached. Its implementation varies substantially between machines.
Steam systems
Steam performance depends on boiler capacity, pressure, heating power, steam-wand design and recovery behaviour.
Maintenance
Water treatment, backflushing, gasket replacement, cleaning and descaling where appropriate are engineering and reliability issues, not merely cosmetic maintenance.
