Start with taste and flow
Describe the problem first: sharp/sour, bitter/dry, weak/thin, overly strong, slow or fast. Then inspect dose, beverage yield, grind, water and contact time.
If a brew tastes sharp and thin
Possible causes include insufficient extraction, a coarse grind, low temperature, short contact time or uneven flow. Change one major variable and retest.
If a brew tastes bitter and dry
Possible causes include excessive extraction, very fine particles, excessive contact time or uneven brewing. Again, confirm with recipe and flow rather than assuming bitterness always means over-extraction.
If flow is unexpectedly slow
Check grind size, fines, filter condition, dose, bed depth and agitation. Espresso also requires checking puck preparation and channeling.
Keep a brew log
Recording dose, water, grind, time, yield and sensory notes turns troubleshooting into a repeatable experiment rather than guesswork.
