How bags, valves, seals and oxygen barriers protect roasted coffee from environmental exposure.
One-way valves
Roasted coffee can release gas after packaging. One-way degassing valves allow gas to escape while limiting reverse air movement, helping prevent bags from swelling excessively.
Barrier properties
Packaging can differ in resistance to oxygen, moisture, light and aroma transfer. The barrier performance matters alongside the closure and storage environment.
Vacuum and flushing
Commercial packers may use vacuum systems or inert-gas flushing to reduce oxygen exposure. These approaches have different packaging and process requirements.
The package is part of the system
A high-barrier bag cannot fully compensate for poor storage conditions after opening. Once the package is repeatedly opened, fresh oxygen enters and the protection changes.
