How to Store Coffee
Practical storage principles for whole-bean and ground coffee at home, including containers, heat, light, moisture and oxygen.
Whole beans versus ground coffee
Whole beans generally retain volatile compounds longer because less surface area is exposed. Grinding immediately before brewing is therefore a common freshness strategy.
Airtight and opaque
A well-sealed container that limits oxygen and light can help. The ideal container should also remain dry and avoid repeated exposure to humid air.
Heat and moisture
Keep coffee away from excessive heat and humidity. Condensation is particularly undesirable because it introduces moisture to the coffee.
Fridge or freezer?
Storage choices depend on package size, opening frequency and moisture control. Freezing can slow chemical change, but repeated opening and condensation can undermine the benefit. For ordinary household use, a cool, dry, sealed environment is often simpler.
