Freshness & Storage

Roast Date, Best Before & Coffee Freshness

How to interpret roast dates, best-before dates and freshness claims without treating any one date as a universal quality threshold.

Roast date

The roast date tells you when the coffee was roasted. It is useful context but does not by itself determine when the coffee tastes best.

Best-before date

A best-before date is a product quality date, not a precise sensory expiry point. Packaging, storage and roast all affect how the coffee changes.

Resting windows

Different coffees and brew methods can benefit from different periods after roasting. Espresso often requires more attention to degassing than some immersion methods.

Use sensory evidence

If a coffee smells flat, tastes muted or shows stale or oxidised notes, those observations may be more useful than applying a rigid age rule.
