Ethiopian origin
The coffee plant is indigenous to Ethiopia, especially the southwestern highlands and forests associated with Coffea arabica diversity.
Yemen and cultivation
Yemen was central to the early cultivation, trade and development of coffee as a commercial beverage crop. The port of Mocha became strongly associated with the international coffee trade.
The Kaldi story
The story of a goat herder named Kaldi discovering coffee after observing energetic goats is a famous legend. It is useful cultural history, but it is not a securely documented account of the first discovery of coffee consumption.
Why the distinction matters
Coffee history combines archaeology, written records, oral traditions and later retellings. A good reference should distinguish documented evidence from stories that explain or celebrate the crop’s origins.
