Roasting

Light roast coffee

Light roast is a common commercial description for coffee roasted to a relatively lighter degree. The exact boundary is not universally standardised.

Roasting development

During roasting, green coffee loses moisture, changes colour and undergoes complex chemical reactions. Lightly roasted coffee generally spends less time or reaches a lower development level than a darker roast, depending on the roaster's profile.

Flavour tendencies

Light roasts are often associated with greater perceived acidity and more prominent origin characteristics. These are tendencies, not guarantees.

Brewing

Light roasted coffee can require different grind, temperature or recipe choices from a darker coffee, but there is no single “correct” recipe. Dial in according to the coffee and brewer.
